About Wiki Loves Monuments

The Wiki Loves Monuments conducted by Wikipedia is a photography contest for those who can brighten up their local site seeing areas, monuments in general, by uploading the best you can photograph with what is already a masterpiece. The participant can submit a photograph of the following Monuments in India. The photos that are selected at 

  • Monuments of National Importance – 3689 Monuments
  • State Protected Monuments – 3536 Monuments

International Photos: The participants from India can also submit the photographs of any International Monument provided that monument is present in the WLM participating and for this, they need to upload their photograph in that country's upload section.

It is an international photography contest which was started in 2010 from Netherland and was conducted at European level in 2011 and after that at the global level in the year 2012. In 2012 around 3.5 lakh images were submitted by participants from 35 countries.

The motive behind this competition is to enhance Wikipedia in its local and regional origin. Now. This year the WLM contest is being organised in 40+ countries.

The Prizes for the National Level Contest are as follows

They will be chosen by the Wiki Loves Monuments India team on the basis of the total count of submissions as well as on the coverage and quality of the photograph.

The national juries will nominate photos for the international contest, which has its own jury and awards.

International Contest Prizes

  • The first prize will be a scholarship which will be in the form of travel grant with a maximum value of €2000 for participation in Wikimania (August 2017, Montreal, Canada).
    • Wikimania is an annual conference for the international Wikimedia community which will be held in Montreal Canada.
  • Two €1000 and two €500 of cash prize will be given.

Wiki Loves Monuments Application form and Process

For participating in this contest one should simply login or create an account on the website

  • Step 1: Create an account or log in
  • Step 2: Find local sites/monuments
    • Approved List of Indian Monuments : Click Here to check the approved list of Indian Monuments for this photography contest.
  • Step 3: Take photographs(the best you can)

Guidelines for the Photograph

  • Picture should be self-taken
  • Be uploaded within the time frame (September 2016)
  • Should at least be 2 MP
  • Should be free licensed
  • Photoshop or editing of the original photo is permitted
  • It is not necessary to take pictures during the time of upload instead can be taken previously but should be uploaded in the month of September.

Submission of the Photographs

 The photographs have to be numbered as per the ASI list and then uploaded here 

For International Monuments

  1. Images uploaded from a region should be of that region itself. 
  2. Also upload the highest resolution from your camera, images with watermark and border should not be submitted.
  3. The participant should only upload photos taken/shot by them. Do not upload images from other websites. Copyright violations will be deleted immediately.
  4. The participant can upload multiple photos.

Wiki Loves Monuments Selection Process

National Round: In every participating country one can win awards (in the form of money). National winners in India will be intimated on their registered email ID before November 30, 2016.

Jury for the Indian Contest

  • Rohit Varma – A wildlife photographer
  • Pramod Subbarao`
  • Pavithra Hanchagaiah

International Round: The best photos in each country will then be nominated for the International Round. The photographs will then be judged by International Jury, which will select the best monument photos in 2016.

Selection Criteria

  • Technical quality (Sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.)
  • Originality / setting
  • Usefulness of the image on Wikipedia
