PMRF is Prime Minister's Research Fellowship. It is a PhD scholarship scheme that is launched by MHRD and offers PhD scholarships to 3000 meritorious students from IITs, IISc, IIITs, NITs, and IISERs. These 3000 students will be selected in three batches starting from 2019-20 through a rigorous process and will be provided direct admission into PhD Programmes in IITs and IISc to pursue research in frontier areas of science & technology, with an enhanced monthly fellowship amount as mentioned on this page below.
The PMRF application opens twice in a year for May and December for awarding a fellowship.
Interested candidates have to fill the PMRF online application form to get the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF). The application process has started from September 2019 and the direct link to application page is available on this page below.

PMRF scheme was launched to give encouragement to meritorious students from selected institutes. PMRF scheme was launched at a total cost of Rs.1650 crore for a period of seven years beginning 2019-20. The objective of the scheme is to encourage highly skilled researchers and scientists to pursue their R&D interests in Indian Institutions.

In addition to the fellowship as mentioned above, each Fellow will be eligible for a Research Grant of Rs. 2 Lakh each year for five years towards foreign travel for presenting a research paper. The Fellows selected under the scheme will be recognized as “Prime Minister’s Research Fellows”.
The tenure of fellowship will be four years for students from integrated courses and five years for B. Tech. students.

Candidates have to fill the online application form to avail the MHRD Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship. The application process started in September and the last date of application is 15 October 2019. The direct link to the application form is given below. Candidates can click on the link available on this page to fill the online application form of PMRF.
The application form of MHRD Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship has to be submitted through the online mode. Candidates should check the filled application form before the final submission. And they also keep the photocopy of filled application form for future reference.
The Project abstract should clearly articulate the area of the study and should display keen interest and insight on the subject chosen.
The Project abstract should formulate a problem for the study which would be used for assessing the applicant's analytical and research skills.
The topic chosen shall be preferably in cutting-edge technology and science, with a focus on national priorities.
The abstract should be original in the applicant's own words, provide formulation and other technical details of the problem. Evaluation of the abstracts will be an important component in the final selection of applicants for the PMRF.
Candidates can pay the application fee through the SBI Online or SBI e-receipt. In the case of SBI e-receipt candidates have to fill the details of e-receipt such as Fee SBI Collect Reference Number and SBI Collect e-receipt date. They are also required to upload the SBI Collect e-receipt on the application form.
The selection of candidates for the PMRF will be done through the two-stage process with screening by the Reviewers and final selection by the Selection Committee for each research vertical to ensure competition, standardization, transparency and selection of the best talent. This shall be done in the following manner:
In 2018, a total of 139 scholars were selected for the PhD Programme in IITs and IISc. The names of all the selected students are given on the website.
