About International Essay Contest for young people by UNESCO
UNESCO International Essay Contest for Young People is conducted by UNESCO along with Goi Peace Foundation. UNESCO which was started 72 years ago to build peace of mind is now celebrating its 73 anniversary in 2018. This annual essay contest is organised in an effort to harness the energy, imagination and initiative of the world’s youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development. It aims to inspire society to learn from the young minds and to think about how each of us can make a difference in the world.
The Theme of the essay is "The Change I Want to Make".
What is the one thing you would like to change the most to make your school, workplace, community, country or the world a better place? How would you bring about that change?
Please share your concrete idea.
The 1st prize winner will be invited to Tokyo, Japan to receive the award which will be sponsored by the organisers.

International Essay Contest for young people by UNESCO Reward
The following awards will be given in the Children’s category and Youth category respectively for the International Essay Writing Competition
- 1st Prize: Certificate and prize of 100,000 Yen (approx. US$900 as of February 2018) (1 entrants)
- 2nd Prize: Certificate and prize of 50,000 Yen (approx. US$450 as of February 2018) (2 entrants)
- 3rd Prize: Certificate and gift (5 entrants)
- Honorable Mention: Certificate and gift (25 entrants)
First Prize Winners wins a trip to Tokyo
- 1st prize winners will be invited to attend the award ceremony in Tokyo, Japan on 23 November 2018. The trip will be sponsored by the organisers.
- Additional awards will also be given if applicable:
- Recognition of effort
- Best school award
- School incentive award
International Essay Contest for young people by UNESCO Application form and Process
UNESCO Essay Writing Contest 2018 can be done by two ways that are through Individual Registration and through School/ Organization. The guidelines for writing the Essay and the ways to submit the Essay has been described below:
Guidelines for Writing the Essay
- Essays must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German; or 1600 characters or less in Japanese excluding the title.
- The essay file must be in MS Word or PDF format. The essays may be typed or printed.

- Cover Page: Essays must have a cover page indicating:
- Category (Children or Youth)
- Essay title
- Participant's name
- Address
- Phone number, E-mail
- Nationality
- Age as of 15 June 2018
- Gender
- School name (if applicable)
- Word count.
- Essays must be original and unpublished. Essays must not be co-authored. It should have been written by a single person. Publishing rights of the essay will be assigned to the organisers.
Submission Form Submission
Online Submission: The duly filled in Application Form along with the Essay must be submitted Online through www.goipeace.or.jp
Offline Submission: Teachers and youth directors or an individual may submit a collection of essays from their class or group. Please enclose a list of participants’ names, ages and the name and contact information of the submitting teacher or director. Entries may be submitted by postal mail to the following address.

Declaration of Winners
- UNESCO Essay Competition Result: All prize winners will be announced on 31 October 2018 on the Goi Peace Foundation web site www.goipeace.or.jp.
- Certificates and gifts will be mailed to the winners in December 2018.
