JMI to introduce BSc Aeronautics jointly with Pawan Hans Limited. This is a first time that Central University like Jamia Milla Islamia (JMI) is going to offer a three-year B.Sc. Degree in the field of Aeronautics. JMI introducing this B.Sc. degree in collaboration with the country’s national helicopter company, Pawan Hans Limited (PHL), a mini-Ratna Public Sector Undertaking. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Mr. A. P. Siddiqui, Registrar, JMI and Mr. T. Sridhar, Executive Director (HR & Admin), PHL, in the presence of JMI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Talat Ahmad and PHL Chairman-cum Managing Director, Dr B. P. Sharma, Pro-Vice Chancellor JMI, Prof Shahid Ashraf, Deans, faculty members and senior officials from the two sides.
Candidates who will be enrolled in this B.Sc. (Aeronautics) degree course will get two certifications, the graduation degree certification will be awarded by JMI and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering certificate will be issued by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The Faculty of Engineering will be responsible for teaching the theoretical aspects of the course and while the practical training parts will be provided by PHL facilities.
Both male and female candidates who cleared Class 12 Board examination with Science and Maths can apply for this course. There will be an entrance test conducted by JMI for admission to the course. Prof Ahmad (VC-JMI) said that the civil aviation industry is growing rapidly and this course will help to fulfil the requirements of trained personnel not just within the country but globally.

They also said that JMI already has MOUs with the Indian Air Force and the Navy allowing their personnel to pursue degree courses in JMI. This BSc course will enable them with fresh job opportunities after their retirement from the services. JMI always contributed towards the nation-building and that course like this will go a long way in serving and strengthening the nation, Prof said.
Prof Ahmad said, there is no doubt that our country has made excellent developments in aerospace and satellite research but there is scope for more research in the field of aeronautics especially given the country’s topography.
This was a historic day when two prestigious institutions have joined hands for a cause which is the need of the aviation industry said, Dr Sharma. They also said that many cadets coming into the aviation sector to operate the 380 aircraft and 280 helicopters of India, and more than 500 aircraft will be added in the next 4-5 years. Therefore, it will require a large number of trained engineers and personnel to maintain the aircraft.
He added that earlier the students were investing three years and were only getting a certificate in Aircraft Maintenance from DGCA but with the launching of this course, they will get a graduate degree. The dual degree is a good combination and with the phenomenal expansion of the aviation sector, the pass-outs will have great job opportunities. As per the MOU, both the sides have also agreed to explore the possibility of launching B.Sc. (Aviation).
At the time of the signing of the MOU, Deputy Chief Aircraft Engineer of PHL, Mumbai, Mohammed Ameer, an alumnus of JMI played a key role.
