JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 has been defined by National Testing Agency (NTA). The interested candidates must check JEE eligibility criteria 2019 to know whether they can apply for the test. JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 - Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs
Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs will be done through Central Seat Allocation Board on the basis of JEE Main AIR (All India Rank). However, such candidates must satisfy the following JEE Main eligibility criteria 2019
- For admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs aspirants need to secure at least 75% in Class 12 or equivalent examination (65% for SC/ST candidates), or
- Aspirants need to be in the top 20 percentile in the Class 12 examination conducted by respective boards
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 - Academic Details
As mentioned earlier, candidates who have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2017 or 2018 or who will be appearing in the qualifying examination in the year 2019 are also eligible to appear for JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination). However, aspirants who have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination in the year 2016 or who will appear for the examination in the year 2020 are later not eligible to appear for JEE Main 2019. Moreover, candidates who have appeared in class 12 or equivalent examination in the year 2016, but passed in the year 2017 are also not eligible for the national level entrance examination.
Subjects in Qualifying Examination
Though the basic subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are mandatory. Check the combination of subjects studied in class 12 or equivalent examination, which will be considered eligible for appearing in JEE Main Paper 1 and Paper 2 (B.Tech/B.E. and B.Arch/B.Planning) are:
- Language
- Physics (compulsory for B.Arch)
- Mathematics (compulsory for B.Arch and B.Tech)
- Anyone from Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational subject
- Any other subject
Note: In order to appear for JEE Main 2019, students must take at least 5 subjects. In case, if a candidate takes four subjects and provides wrong information regarding their academic profile, then their result will not be declared.
Qualifying Percentage for JEE Main 2019
The authority has not specified any pass percentage in JEE Main eligibility criteria 2019. This is because JEE Main is also an eligibility test for admission to engineering colleges in the states like Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Nagaland, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Chandigarh etc. and the qualifying Class 12 percentage required in these colleges varies from state to state.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 - List of Qualifying Examination
The list of exams from which candidates must have passed their qualifying examination are:
- Class 12 or any equivalent examination from any recognized central/state board like CBSE, ICSE, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi etc.
- Intermediate or Pre-University course or Pre-Degree course examination conducted by recognized board or authority
- Final examination of the 2-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy
- National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Senior Secondary School examination with a minimum of five subjects
- Any public school/university/board examination in India or in any foreign country which the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognizes equivalent to class 12
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria - List of Qualifying Examinations recognized by IITs
Below are certain qualifying exams which only IITs recognize:
- H.S.C vocational examination
- Diploma which AICTE recognizes or a state board of technical education of at least 3 years duration
- General Certificate Examination (GCE) at London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka at the Advanced level
- High school certificate examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva
Note: If the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public Board or Pre-University examination in an earlier level.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 - Number of attempts
As mentioned earlier, aspirants can only appear in JEE Main for only 3 consecutive years. However, the eligibility norms of states like Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland and Odisha are different from the rest of the states. The JEE eligibility criteria for the colleges of these states are set as per the orders of their state government.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 for Droppers
JEE Main eligibility criteria for droppers can be divided into two categories, which are - first eligibility norms for candidates who dropped a year for IIT JEE preparation. And the second are those who have appeared in Joint Entrance Examination Main but did not manage to qualify or, have qualified but got admitted to another institute and wish to attempt again. Such candidates must make sure that they fulfil the following criteria -
JEE Main Eligibility for Droppers
- Candidates should have born on or after 1 October 1994. Relaxation of age is to SC/ST/PwD candidates of 5 years i.e. aspirants should have born on or after 1 October 1989
- It is mandatory for aspirants to pass the qualifying examination in 2017 or 2018
- Candidates who are attempting again for JEE Main should have appeared in the previous year as they can appear for three consecutive years
- For admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, aspirants must have secured at least 75% or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards
- At least 5 subjects should have been taken by aspirants in their qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as the compulsory one
Candidates appearing for Improvement Examination
If the candidates have met all the eligibility criteria but could not secure the minimum percentage required for IIITs, NITs, and CFTIs, then they can appear for improvement examination:
- Improvement for one or more subject – If a candidate is appearing for improvement subjects (not all), then the percentile of Class 12 will be considered
- Improvement in all subjects – If a candidate is appearing for improvement in all subjects, then the percentile secured in the current session will be taken into consideration
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2019 – Requirement of Aadhaar Card
It is mandatory for aspirants to fill their Aadhaar Card details while filling JEE Main application form 2019. As per the notification released, the use of Aadhaar card will result in an accuracy of applicant details. Applicants who are in possession of Aadhaar Card must enter their Aadhaar number, date of birth, name and gender in the application form of JEE Main 2019 for the identification purpose.
Candidates who have enrolled for Aadhaar are required to fill/make the application for Aadhaar. Aspirants can also visit the aAadhaar enrolment centre to get enrolled for Aadhaar
Students who have passed or appearing in class 12 or equivalent examination from the state of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir need to enter their passport number, ration card number, bank account number or any other valid Government identity proof provided they should select the city for examination in these states only.
Note: Adhaar card is mandatory to appear in the JEE Mains in all the states except for Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya.
JEE Main 2019 Eligibility Criteria – State Codes
The state code of JEE Main eligibility criteria refers to the code of the state from which candidate has completed his/her class 12 or equivalent examination by virtue of which he/she has become eligible to appear for JEE Main 2019.
If a candidate has passed their qualifying examination from one state and has appeared for the improvement from another one, then JEE Main eligibility criteria state code will be from where he/she has originally appeared for the test.

As mentioned above, it is extremely important for aspirants to make sure that they fulfil all the JEE Main eligibility norms before they start filling the eligibility norms. Some of the important things that applicants must keep in mind while going through the JEE Main eligibility criteria 2019 are as follows -
- Go through all the instructions regarding the eligibility criteria of JEE Main 2019
- Each participating institutes will have their own eligibility norms. Therefore, candidates are advised to go through the JEE Main eligibility 2019 set by the institutes in which they are applying
- However, candidates qualifying in JEE Main does not make them eligible for admission to IIITs, NITs and other CFTIs
- There is no age limit to appear for JEE Main 2019, however, candidates are advised to check the minimum age criteria of the JEE Main participating institutes before they apply
- Candidates who are appearing in their Class 12 board exams this year are also eligible to appear for JEE Main 2019

Question: I am a diploma student. Am I eligible to appear for JEE Main 2019?
Answer: Yes you are eligible to appear for JEE Main, but only for the purpose to get eligible for JEE Advanced. You cannot get admission NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, as they do not give admissions to diploma holders.
Question: if I fail in one subject in Class 12, can I still fill JEE Main application form?
Answer: Yes, if you appeared for the qualifying examination in 2017/2018, but failed in a subject and are appearing in 2018/2019, then you are eligible. However, if you have appeared in the year 2016 and appearing for compartment paper in 2017, then you are not eligible.
Question: Can I appear for improvement in one subject of Class 12 and apply for JEE Main 2019?
Answer: Yes you can. However, it is valid to attempt an improvement to get 75% in class 12. If it is to get into the top 20 percentile, then you have to appear in all the 5 subjects.
