University Grants Commission (UGC) is the statutory organisation established by the Government of India to maintain the standards of University Education in the country. UGC was set up in 1956, and today under the chairmanship of Prof. Ved Prakash, UGC gives recognition to Universities in India and also distributes funds to Colleges and Universities to facilitate the enhancement of standard of University education.
In the same endeavour, various UGC Scholarship is offered to support the needy as well as the meritorious students to help them complete their higher education and move ahead on their career path. The motive behind UGC scholarship is to make college and university education available to those who are financially weak but are capable of bringing about changes in the educational scenario of the nation using research and other related activities.

Scholarships benefit more than 20,000 candidates every year
UGC Scholarship is planned in such a way that they cater to all sections equally and provide equal chances to everyone who is contributing to the educational scenario of the country. Every year UGC Scholarship provide benefit to more than 20,000 candidates throughout the nation. Beneficiaries of UGC Scholarship range from undergraduate/postgraduate students, Females/girls, candidates belonging to reserved categories, as well as the experienced faculties of the institutions which are about to retire.
Most of the scholarships offered by UGC are means based, but Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder is the only Merit-based scholarship. Keeping in mind the enormous efforts involved and the infrastructure required for research purpose, most of the scholarships are for well-experienced candidates having Masters’ Degrees and who are willing to go for research in various fields.
Generally, UGC Scholarship goes directly into the accounts of the beneficiaries, but in some scholarships, students receive the benefit of the scholarship through their institutes and the institutions in return get Departmental Assistance from UGC for providing the required facility to the student.

Disbursement of UGC Scholarship
The Commission will disburse the scholarship through DBT (Direct Beneficiary Transfer) with effect from July 2017. All awards will be disbursed based on the Aadhar Number of the Applicant. Aadhar Number will be used as an Identifier for disbursement of the UGC Scholarship. As per the UGC Notification in the case of non-availability of Aadhar Card, the candidates can provide any alternate government-issued identity card for the scholarship.
In case students have not received the scholarship or fellowship from UGC then they can visit the UGC Office 11 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Improvement of the SC/ST Scholarship Scheme by UGC
As per the notification released by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on 28 November 2016, MHRD has taken the following steps to smoothen the payment of Scholarship & Fellowship under the various schemes:
- The MHRD has decided to provide the scholarship to the students through the Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) mode.
- Distribution of scholarship amount to the awardees through Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
- The MHRD has created a dedicated web portal (https://scholarship.canarabank.in/AdminLogin.aspx) for migration of legacy cases on DBT platform.
- A Fellowship tracking portal (https://scholarship.canarabank.in/scholar/Login.aspx) has been set up where the students can check the status of the payment, date of upload of documents, etc.
- The MHRD also introduced an email id (ugcfellowship.ugc@gmail.com) to facilitate and help the students in disbursal related complaints about fellowship & scholarship.
- The MHRD has also provided a telephone number (01123235640) for the complaints regarding the disbursal of fellowship & scholarship.
