About World of 7 billion Student Video Contest
World of 7 Billion Student Video Contest aims to influence public policies, attitudes, and behaviour on national and global population issues and related concerns. The World of 7 Billion campaign is an educational platform for students and teachers. The UN has declared the World Population surpassing 7 billion on 31 October 2011 and prior to this date, the UN celebrated the Day of Six Billion in October 1999 and it took thousands of years for the global population to hit 5 billion and today we have reached the level of population explosion.
- Eligibility: Any middle or high school student (grade 6-12, or the international equivalent).
- Keeping in mind the interdependence of people and the planet, create a short (60 seconds or less) video that about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges.
World of 7 Billion Video Contest Theme
- Sustaining Water Systems – Agricultural pollution, aquifer depletion, sanitation infrastructure, waste disposal, modifying waterways (dams, levees), safe drinking water
- Improving Climate Resiliency – Climate migrants, poor urban planning, extreme weather events, agricultural productivity, disease evolution, global inequity in climate adaptation
- Ensuring Economic Opportunities – the Gender wage gap, global wealth inequality, workers’ rights, poverty cycle, microfinance, green jobs
All video must include the following thing
- How population growth impacts the issue
- At least one idea for a sustainable solution.

World of 7 Billion Video Contest Cash Prizes
Best in State (x50)
- 50 cash prizes will be awarded to the best video in each state.
Best International by Region
- Six cash prizes will be awarded to the best international video by world region (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America).

World of 7 billion Student Video Contest Application form and Process
There are no paper forms needed to enter a video. Participants will need to fill out the online entry form when you upload your video (you’ll be prompted to the form after you click the “Upload” button). There is no entry fee

- Fill in the details in the form and submit.
- If your video is chosen as a finalist, you will need to submit a signed Parent Permission Form and Media Release form, and, when applicable, Actor Release Form, to Population Connection.
- Important to Note: Finalist videos CANNOT be awarded a prize unless the necessary forms are received.
Video Submission Guidelines
- The length of the video should not exceed 60 seconds (one minute), not including the 5-second title screen
- All entries should begin with a 10-second full-screen “title screen” that includes the following information
- Lead Producer’s name
- School name
- School city, state
- Title of video
- Total running time (not including the 10-second title screen)
World of 7 billion Student Video Contest Selection Process
Entries will be judged by the topic and the winners will be announced for each topic

- Improving Climate Resiliency
- Ensuring Economic Opportunities
World of 7 Billion Video Contest Selection Criteria
- Does the video follow the guidelines?
- Quality of Video
Weightage | Selection Criteria |
35% | Content Clarity: Does the video clearly make the connection between population and the chosen topic? Does the video explain why the chosen topic is important on a global scale? |
35% | Memorable/Interesting: How well does the video draw in the viewer and keep their attention? Is the video original and innovative? |
20% | Logical Solution: Is the solution offered appropriate and supported by your claims? |
10% | Production: What is the overall quality of production (including visual and sound elements)? |
A finalist is not a winner. Being chosen as a finalist means that your video was voted into the Top Ten and will go on to be judged by a panel of experts.
- All winners will be notified directly no later than 5 May 2020. A complete list of winners, along with the winning videos, will be posted at www.Worldof7Billion.org
