18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture Students

18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture Students invites applications from Architecture students to participate and come up with architecture designs based on the theme "The Reconstruction of Commons today." The aim of the Competition is to enlarge the perspectives of architecture as flexible and as broadly as possible, beyond the stereotypes of what architecture is considered to be. The 18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture Students is free for the individual as well as team participation. This page gives the details regarding the 18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture Students.

• The applications are to be made online but the submission is to be done by sending the designs to the organizers of the competition by mail or courier. 
• There is no participation fee that is to be paid for the competition and the winner will get cash prize worth  ¥2,000,000(Approx. 10,00,000 INR).
• The announcement of the result of 18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture Students will be announced on 28 October 2017.

The participants shortlisted for open presentation will be invited to Tokyo and their accommodation and transportation expenses will be covered by the organizers. Transportation and accommodation costs for participation in the final jury will be paid for one person per entry. The details of other prizes to be distributed are given below

18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture Students Rewards

• First Prize: A single winner will be selected for the award of First Prize and a cash prize of ¥2,000,000 (Approx. 10,00,000 INR) along with a Certificate of Merit will be given to the winner.
• Second Prize: Second Prize will be given to 2 winners and will include a cash prize of ¥500,000 (Approx. 2,00,000 INR) along with Merit Certificate.
• Third Prize:  3 participants will get third Prize and it will consist cash prize of ¥100,000 (Approx. 50,000 INR) along with Certificate of Merit.
• Commendations Prizes: Several commendations prizes will be offered participants which will consist of Merit Certificate and Gift.

Later on, they need to take out the printout of the reply email that the participants have received from the competition office and have to submit the form to the Shelter Student Architectural Design Competition Office.

Attachments to be done for 18th Shelter Design Competition for Architecture 

The application needs to be submitted along with the following attachments:

• Printout of Reply email: The participants are required to take the print out of the email received from the competition office and paste it on the bottom right-hand corner and mention the entry number on the top right corner of the submission.
• Design: The Design needs to be on an A2 sized sheet of paper and can be either in Landscape or Portrait orientation.
• Explanatory Text: The explanatory text needs to be either in English or Japanese and the participants are free to choose illustration and the scale of the drawing.

Important points regarding the 18th Shelter Design Competition Application

• Only the physical form sent to the Shelter Co., Ltd. Tokyo office would be accepted.
• The digital application form submission sent by email will not be accepted
• Application can be sent rolled, but it must not be folded
• The submission of the participants will not be returned.
• The work submitted by the participants must be original and must not have been published previously anywhere.

Submission of the Application Form

Participants are suggested to fill every detail mentioned in the 18th Shelter Design Competition Application Form and check it before 

All the entries are to be sent by the means of Post to the organizers and no digital entries will be accepted for the competition. The entries can be rolled but should not be folded. The entries are to be sent to the following address:

After the submission of the entry, the work of the participants will be judged by the jury members and the selection will be done. The selection process has two parts:

• Initial Private Jury: The received entries will go through shortlisting at Shelter's HQ offices.
• The Final Jury: The shortlisted participants will present their idea in open presentation, which will be organized in Tokyo on 16 December 2017. The decision regarding the winner will be on the basis of the final presentation.
