About Peter Porter Poetry Prize
- Applications are invited from al poets writing in English irrespective of where they live for 12th Peter Porter Poetry Prize by Australian Book Review.
- The Porter Prize is one of Australia’s most lucrative and respected awards for poetry. It honours the life and work of the great Australian poet Peter Porter (1929–2010), an honoured contributor to ABR for many years.

Peter Porter Poetry Prize Reward
- First Prize: AU$5,000 and Arthur Boyd’s etching and aquatint The lady and the unicorn, 1975
- The shortlisted poets will each receive AU$500.
Peter Porter Poetry Prize Application form and Process
Interested candidates can participate in Peter Porter Poetry Prize 2017 via either of the two modes discussed below:
Poems must not exceed 75 lines and must be written in English.
Mode 1: Online: To enter the Porter Prize Online candidates have to fill in the Application Form available online
Specifications of the Online Entries
- Format: PDFs or Word documents
- The text should be presented with single-line spacing and in 12 pt font size.
- The pages should be numbered.
- Stanza breaks must be clearly indicated.
- The file name should only include the title of the poem.
- The author’s name must not appear in the document or in the name of the digital file.
Mode 2: Offline (By Mail): To enter the Porter Prize Offline candidates have to download the Application Form available online
Specifications of the Offline entries
- Poems sent by post must be printed on single-sided A4 paper.
- The text should be presented with single-line spacing and in 12 pt font size
- The poet’s name must not appear on the manuscript – only on the entry form.
Important Points
- Cheques should be made payable to Australian Book Review.
- Only one copy is required.
- Hard-copy entries postmarked 1 December 2016 will not be accepted.
- Participating candidates name must not appear in the Word file/PDF, the file’s title or on the hard copy. It should appear only on the entry form
Submission of Entries
The duly written poem as per the prescribed specifications has to be sent to the following address along with the cheque:

Acknowledgment: Hard-copy entries will be acknowledged by email within one month of receipt

Peter Porter Poetry Prize Selection Process
Judging is completely anonymous.
- The judges are Ali Alizadeh, Jill Jones, and Felicity Plunkett.
- A list of 6 shortlisted maximum of six poems will be announced and those poems will appear in the March or April 2017 issue of ABR.
- The winner will be announced later in March or April 2017 at a ceremony to which all entrants will be invited.
- The judges’ decision would be final and abiding
