About 9th Indian Innovation Initiative
9th Indian Innovation Initiative (i3) 2017 is a National Level Competition that aims to promote entrepreneurship in the country by sensitising, encouraging and facilitating innovators for commercialization of their innovations.The applicant must have a prototype (working model/software/simulation) or proof of concept or that is demonstrable.
9th Indian Innovation Initiative (i3) is for Indian Citizens who can either participate individually or in teams from academia, government laboratories, non-government R&D institutions and laboratories, incorporated early-stage startups and other non-incorporated entities. However, the candidate applying has to ensure that:
- The submitted innovative product or technology must be beyond the idea stage, solving at least one industrial or social challenge.
- The potential to commercialise within 2-3 years.
9th Indian Innovation Initiative is conducted by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India.

Top 100 Innovators

- Opportunity to present their innovations live in front of a Jury through a brief presentation and Q&A session organized as part of the Regional workshop.
Top 20
- Selected from the regional round will get the opportunity to present their innovations live in front of a Grand Jury comprising eminent persons through a brief pitching and Q&A session.The winners of the top awards will be recognized and awarded at a gala Awards function.
Participation in National Fair in Delhi: All applications will undergo online evaluation by the i3 Expert Committee.The shortlisted innovators will be invited to participate and exhibit their innovations/projects in The National Fair & Awards Ceremony (a two-day event) in New Delhi.
Winners of AICTE Category: The winners under the AICTE category will also be recognised and rewarded by AICTE.
9th Indian Innovation Initiative Application form and Process
Participants can apply for the Innovative Initiative online as well as offline. For online applications, participants have to fill the online registration form along with the list of relevant documents given below.

The candidates who are applying offline must follow the rules of language and documentation and have to maintain the proper formatting of the application under the word limits specified.
Documents to be enclosed with the application form
- Brief profile of the innovator with a passport-size photograph.
- It is important to submit proof of identity as part of the Application form. Documents accepted: Passport, Aadhaar, Voter ID, Driving License, PAN Card.
- CompletedPAF Template/ Document:
- Summary of the innovative solution.
- High-resolution pictures of the prototype/working model.
- All questions pertaining to the invention.
- Upload the signed and scanned Certificate/Undertaking form that is attached as part of the Application Form.
Submission of application form for 9th Indian Innovation initiative:
Applications for 9th Indian Innovation Initiative (i3) can be submitted both online and offline.
Online Submission: The candidates who wish to apply online have to fill and submit the application form along with the required documents on the official website of CII Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
9th Indian Innovation Initiative Selection Process
All applications will undergo online evaluation by the i3 Expert Committee. Applications will be assessed and selected on the basis of criteria given below by the i3 Expert Committee consisting of jury members derived from the government, academia, and industries. The shortlisted innovators will be invited to participate and exhibit their innovations/projects in The National Fair & Awards Ceremony (a two-day event) in New Delhi.
Selection Criteria
- Creativity and Originality of the Innovation: The innovation must be different in its area of application that can impact the society. The innovation should be in the form of a prototype (working model of a product or service) and should not be copied or stolen by any means.
- Application of Innovation: The innovation should have solved at least one existing industrial and social challenge related to the focused areas prescribed in the program.
- The potential for commercialization: The innovation should have a significant potential for commercialization within next two or three years. Innovations with higher utility or problem-solving capacity are more likely to be selected for commercialization. The innovator must be motivated to commercialize his/her innovation(s).
- The potential for addressing industrial and/or social concerns: The innovation should target to solve at least one existing industrial and social challenge.
