About Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship
Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship is launched in the Joint Statement of the government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of India. The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) administers the Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship on behalf of both the Governments. Fulbright Kalam Climate fellowship is offered for the following two disciplines.
The application process has started and the last date to apply is 16 July 2018. The fellowship is for the scientific and technical research scholars and professionals from both the countries. The fellowship will be provided for the following research program:
- Doctoral Research: It is for Indian PhD scholars registered at an Indian institution.
- Fellowship Period: 6-9 months
- Post-doctoral Research: It is for Indian faculty and researchers who are in the early stages of their research careers in India. The fellows will have access to some of the finest resources in their areas of interest.
- Fellowship Period: 8 to 12 months

Note: Preference will be given to candidates who have not had extensive recent U.S. experience. Some fellowship programs may have prerequisites and guidelines in addition to those described above. Please review the eligibility criteria for specific fellowships carefully. Doctoral Research

Note: In the application, the applicants are required to indicate the period in which they can complete their proposed project in the United States and determine their grant duration carefully. The duration cannot be changed. |
Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship Reward
The reward for both the Doctoral and Post-doctoral courses are as follows:
Number of Rewards: 6 fellowships would be awarded
- Airfare: The fellowship will provide a round-trip economy class air travel between India and the US
- Monthly Stipend: The fellowship will also provide a monthly stipend.
- Allowances: A modest setting in allowance and a professional allowance.
- The fellowship will also provide accident and Sickness Program for exchange as per U.S. Government Guidelines.
Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship Application form and Process
The Application process for both the courses has started and the last date to apply is 16 July 2018. The different steps involved in the application process in the courses are mentioned below:
Doctoral Research: The following steps must be followed while filling the Doctoral Research application form:
- Applicants must mention all the general information asked in the Application form such as name, citizenship, application cycle, the field of study, specialisations, current position/occupation. Applicant needs to create an essay within 40 minutes while filling the application form
- Study/Research Objective: Applicant needs to write a clear and detailed description of their study objectives, and give their reasons for wanting to pursue them in the U.S. Be specific about their major field and their specialised interests within this field.
- Applicant must upload their resume or curriculum vitae. Applicant must upload the scanned copies of the following documents that should not exceed 2MB
- Degrees/diplomas certificates and mark sheets
- Mark sheets for all yearly or semester examinations, and not just the final one.
It is to be noted that, the set of the documents must be in chronological order from the latest one. The high school/ Senior Secondary School mark sheets or certificates must not be added. Certificates and mark sheets in any language other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations.
- References: Applicant must submit three references. One of the referees must be their PhD Supervisor. The referee(s) must send the completed Confidential Letter of Reference Form to the following address

- Signature: The applicants must write their signature on the Application form.
- Uploading File: The following files must be uploaded not exceeding 1 MB

- Bio page of applicant’s current passport (pages with their photo, name, passport number etc) (If Applicable)
- Applicant must upload their writing sample that can be a copy of an article or paper published/presented or extracts from their Master’s/M.Phil. thesis, not exceeding 2 MB.
- Test scores and TOEFL: TOEFL scores are not mandatory to submit at the time of the application, but if an applicant took TOEFL in 2017, he/she must upload their test scores. Apart from TOEFL Scores, the following things must be uploaded. It is to be noted that all the above documents must be combined in a PDF and uploaded that must not exceed 2 MB.
- Letter of invitation from U.S institutions (if any);
- PhD registration certificate
- Employer’s Endorsement Form: The applicant must submit their Employer’s Endorsement form because it is only applicable to the employed applicants only. No form will be considered unless this form has been uploaded.It is to be noted that the images taken should be scanned and not to be taken from a mobile.
- Applicants can review all their details and information filled in the application form carefully and take a print out of their records.
- Submission: Applicant must Submit the printout of their Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship application along with the Employer’s Endorsement form.
Post-Doctoral Research
The following steps must be followed while filling the Post-Doctoral application form:
- Personal Information: The Applicant must fill in the personal information which includes name, title, gender, home country/ country applying for, date of birth etc.
- Employment Information: Applicant must select the current position, start date, department/office, Institution they are applying for.
- Academic details: Applicant then must enter their academic details about their various degree and institution from where they have pursued.
- Project Details: The project title can be“Fundamental Tax Reforms in a Globalising World” or “crashworthiness and Rollover Stability of Heavy- Duty Tanker Trucks”. The maximum character must be 160 characters.
- Professional Information: Applicant must mention about their last five years professional travel experience or residence abroad during the last five years. The most recent should be mentioned that does not exceed 3 months.Applicant must list the four most relevant cultural, educational, and professional organisations that they belong to.
- References: Applicant must provide three references. Applicant must download the reference form and mention the names and contact information of three persons from whom the applicant have requested a letter of reference. References must be completed in English.The referee should attach a typed letter on the institutional letterhead addressing the items below and return it with this form to the following address

- Applicant must indicate their personal assessment of their level of competence in English.Applicants must upload their curriculum vitae or resume which should not exceed 2 MB. They must scan and upload their PhD Degree certificate/ Provisional PhD degree certificate. The images must not be taken by mobile phones. After entering all the details on the application form, the applicant needs to preview and check it thoroughly and take a print out of the application form.
- Employment Endorsement form: Applicant must download the employment endorsement form in order to complete their application. It is to be noted that no application form will be accepted without the employment endorsement form.
- Submission: After filling in the Employment Endorsement form, Applicant must submit the application form along with the Employment endorsement form online.

Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship Selection Process
Experts will review all the applications and the applicants recommended by the experts will be required to appear for an interview at the USIEF National Selection Committee in New Delhi.
The expert panels will generally use the following criteria to evaluate the applications:
- Communication skills
- Merit of the proposed Fulbright project
- Commitment to community or national service
- Motivation, Seriousness of Purpose, Maturity, Leadership, Cultural Adaptability
- Academic credentials and professional ability
- Ability to contribute as a cultural ambassador beyond his/her specific field of study
- Need to conduct research in the U.S.
- Outcomes, Potential Impact and Benefits
