About Redress Design Award
Redress Design Award 2018 on its 7th year anniversary encourages students from fashion institutes and young professional from Europe & Asia to participate in their Fashion Design awards 2018. There is a major change from this year i.e. the name of the design award has changed from Ecochic Design Award to Redress Design Award.
The entry to the awards is free and the Redress Design Awards are open for any individual above the age of 18 years and is a fashion student or a newly established fashion designer.
The participant has to design an outfit using the following techniques in the digital format.
- Zero-waste
- Up-cycling
- Reconstruction
Latest Update: There is a major change from this year i.e. the name of the design award has changed from Ecochic Design Award to Redress Design Award.
30 Semi-Finalist will move on to the final round of judging. The finals will be organized in Hong Kong and the expenses of the travel and accommodation will be paid by Redress (Redress is an NGO with a mission to promote environmental sustainability in the fashion industry by reducing textile waste, pollution, water, and energy consumption.)
The winner will get a chance to work with The R Collective, Mentorship with Orsola de Castro and an opportunity get a paid educational trip to Hong Kong.

Redress Design Award Reward
There are fabulous prizes for not only for the winners of the awards but also for the semi-finalists as well. The details of the awards are as follow:
First prize:
- Winner will join the team of fashion game-changers at The R Collective, the new up-cycled fashion brand that was born from Redress, to create an up-cycled collection for retail.
- Candidate will work with The R Collective's Design team before returning to the Hong Kong for four to six weeks to finesse their designs, help to source fabric waste and assist with production planning.
- Candidate will also drive their collection's marketing campaign, including photo and video shoots, as they learn about how scaling up pieces of their winning competition collection for the real world of retail. Along with this crowning prize, the candidate will rightfully earn their position alongside the other talented designers already in The R Collective, bagging themselves the chance to have their voice and talents recognized under this global spotlight.
- Candidate will also receive a one-year full subscription to access all areas of Bloomsbury Fashion Central including the Fairchild Books Library and associated online resources, The Berg Fashion Library and the Fashion Photography Archive.
Second Prize:
- 6 months tailored Mentorship with renowned fashion designer, Orsola de Castro.
- Receive 10 books from the Basics Fashion Design series
People's Choice:
After impressing the global public with their designs in an online vote to outshine their 29 semi-finalist competitors, the candidate will be promoted across Redress’ social networks along with their accolade of People’s Choice, and receive the Bloomsbury Publishing Handbook of Design for Sustainability by Stuart Walker.

Alumni Prizes:
Each cycle of the Redress Design Award we continue to support our alumni, our previous semi-final and final competitors, with prizes through partnerships with like-minded organizations to enhance their careers in sustainable fashion.
- The Redress Design Award 2018 Alumni Prize with Kapok
- This alumni prize winner will receive a customized business development mentorship by the owner of successful independent Hong Kong retailer, Arnault Castel of kapok, and the chance to have his or her collection stocked in the store.
- The Redress Design Award 2018 Alumni Prize with CO (Common Objective)
- This alumni prize winner will receive a 12-month Showcase membership to the CO platform which supports the fashion industry to do business better. Through CO, the winner will have the benefit of a premium business profile, enabling them to showcase their work and make industry connections that will help them to grow their business, as well as access premium intelligence and learning.

The application process of Redress Design Award 2018 is completely online. The application form can be filled either in English or Chinese language. Techniques to be used: In order to participate in the competition the applicant need to use any of the following techniques while designing the outfits:
- Zero-waste: A design technique that eliminates textile waste at the design stage.
- Up-cycling: The recycling of a material into a product of higher quality.
- Reconstruction: The process of making new clothes from previously worn outfits or preformed products.
Design Requirement:
One mood board illustrating the theme, inspiration, and color of the entire competition collection.
Three ready-to-wear outfit illustrations with technical drawings based on one or more sustainable design techniques zero-waste, up-cycling, and reconstruction. No complete outfits are required to be made at the Open Application stage. All artwork must be original creations designed by the applicant and must not have been previously shown in public.
An outfit must be made up of one or more pieces that cover a model's upper and lower body and can include garments such as tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets, and coats. Shoes and accessories are not required.
Information about textile waste selection including the type of fibre, type of textile and source. All designs must use textile waste. Designers are required to provide clear photos of the original textiles before any cutting or alteration, in order to show that such textiles are available for use.
No changes to artworks or textile selections are permitted after submission.

Submission of the Application Form
All candidates must submit their applications form via Redress’ online application system. Candidates should check the filled application form before final submission. To begin your application, click 'Create a new account' and an activation email will be sent to the email address associated with that registration.
Redress Design Award Selection Process
Stage 1: The regional judging panels will select top 15 candidates from region 1 after the competition deadline of 13 March 2018, and the top 15 applications from region 2 to go through to the semi-final round.
Stage 2: The Redress team will notify the 30 semi-finalists of their success individually before the public announcement. Among the 30 semi-finalists, from the region 1 pool, there will be one guaranteed spot for a Hong Kong applicant. Semi-finalists will be publicly announced on the official website of Redress Design Award on 17 April 2018. All 30 semi-finalists will win educational and career-enhancing prizes, details of which is available on this page.
Stage 3: The selected semi-finalist are required to prepare a one-minute video for the judges (e.g. to introduce yourself, your collection etc.) Please note, this video may be used in our documentary TV series ‘Frontline Fashion III’ and for marketing purposes. In addition, semi-finalists are required to have a phone or Skype interview with the Redress team.
Stage 4: After the international judges’ assessment, the Redress team will directly notify the ten finalists, consisting of five finalists from region 1 and five finalists from region 2, who will be publicly announced on the official website of Redress Design Award on 15 May 2018. Among the 10 finalists, there will be one guaranteed spot for a Hong Kong applicant.
