Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017

Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for the students. The motive of conducting the challenge is to inspire creative thinking about science. The students from different countries across the world are invited to participate in this challenge. Breakthrough Junior Challenge is conducted by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. This challenge includes creating and submitting an original video based on the theory in life science, physics or mathematics. Khan Academy is one of the partners of Breakthrough Junior Challenge.

Thousands of students from all over the country submit their entry for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. This challenge encourages the students to be more creative and in presenting their idea in an imaginative way.

• The participants need to create and submit videos of a maximum of 5 minutes in length that brings to life a concept or theory in life Science, Physics or Mathematics. 
• The video should be in English 
• Breakthrough Winners can get up to $2,50,000 and $50,000 prize for teacher.

Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017 Dates

There are exciting prizes in Breakthrough Judging Challenge. The winner of the challenge will win the prizes mentioned below. Along with the following mentioned prizes, the winner would win a trip for him/ her and a parent or guardian to receive the award at live televised Breakthrough Prize Award on 3 December 2017.

To apply for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, the candidates need to submit an entry. The participants have to fill in the forms answering a short questionnaire about yourself, your school and your choose challenge topic and submit your video. The participants must be careful about submitting their application on or before the deadline.

Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017 - Important guidelines for submitting video

Breakthrough Junior Challenge participants need to submit a video by using the following specification. The video must be covering any of the following three categories:

• Physics
• Life Science
• Mathematics

• Duration of the Video: The video must be not more than five minutes or shorter.

• The video should not contain any copyright material and should be solely made by the participant only.
• The subject of the Video should be complex enough to really challenge the participant’s explanatory powers. It should be in a difficulty level so that the general audience should take some time to understand the video.

The video or the film can be in any form like animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction. The Video should be in a dynamic visual medium using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc.

Steps of Filling up the Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017 Application Form

• STEP 1: The participants need to fill the form by following the link given above. In the application form, the participants have to fill the details such as Name, Date of Birth, Email etc.
• STEP 2: The participants need to select a theory, concept or principle in physics life science or mathematics. The theory should be important to understand but challenging to explain.
• STEP 3: Create a short video to communicate the idea in an engaging, illuminating and imaginative way. The participants need to be creative. The participants can use the tools such as animations, simulations or physical demonstrations. The length of the video should not be more than 3 minutes
• STEP 4: The participants at the end need to put their youtube video link in their application and have to join Breakthrough Prize Facebook page. Share the video on their own facebook page

Submission of the Form

The candidates have to fill each and every section of the application form. At the end, they have to submit the form after putting youtube video link in their application. The candidates should ensure that the details filled by them are correct in all aspect else the applications of the candidates may get rejected.

The videos will be judged according to the following criteria:

• Engagement
• Illumination
• Creativity
• Difficulty

Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017 Judging Process

The selection of the winner of Breakthrough Junior Challenge will be chosen in four phases. All the fours phases are given below

Peer to Peer Review 

The participants must make sure that the application submitted by the participant in the Peer-to-Peer Review process. In order to qualify for the challenge, the participant must review and score at least 5 videos submitted by other contestants. After that, the participants may also be asked to review and score additional videos as well.

Evaluation Panel

The next step is the review of the Evaluation Panel which is composed of top-class scholars and teachers in the relevant fields from the Khan Academy. This Evaluation Panel will review the top 75 scoring videos from the Peer-to-Peer Review process. Each of these videos will receive an additional 5 reviews from members of the Evaluation Panel.

Popular Vote Challenge

The Evaluation Panel will decide the top group of videos and accordingly, the semi-finalists will be selected and their videos will be posted on the website of Breakthrough and Breakthrough Facebook Page.

After the posting of the videos on the Facebook Page, there will be a duration of only 10 days for all the Breakthrough Challenge Participants and friends will be invited to “like” their favourite video. The Submission with the largest number of “likes” will be placed in the Finalist round of Judging.

Selection Committee Review

The last review and score of the top group of Semi-Finalists as determined by the Evaluation Panel will be finalised lastly by the review of the Selection Committee. The winner of the Popular Vote Challenge will be added to this Finalist group for the final review and selection of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge prize winner.

Tiebreaker in Breakthrough Junior Challenge

• If a tie occurs in any of the above phases, such entries will be ranked again according to a secondary score provided by those same individuals.
• If the secondary score is also equal to a sub-set of ties, then the final rank order those Entries will be calculated based on the order in which each entrant completed their Peer-to-Peer Reviews. 
• The candidates participating in the contest must. therefore, review and finalise scores for each assigned Entry(Peer-to-Peer Review) in a thoughtful and efficient manner.

Breakthrough Junior Challenge Result

The winners will be announced on the at the live televised Breakthrough Prize Ceremony which will be held on 3 December 2017. In addition to this, the name of the Winner will be posted on the official website of Breakthrough Junior Challenge after verification and announcement of the Winner and will remain posted for ninety (90) days thereafter.
