Single Entrance for Engineering and Architecture Admission from 2018
Single Entrance for Engineering and Architecture Admission from 2018. The government of India has approved the proposal for a single entrance examination to select the deserving candidates for admission in engineering and architecture at the undergraduate level from the academic year 2018, following the lines of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test for admission in medical colleges in India. The proposal of the centre is to improve standards and the quality of engineering education.
After the approval, the Union HRD (Human Resource Development) Ministry has asked the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to implement the proposal for admission from the next academic year 2018-19 and start working on properly regulate the single entrance test. As is the case with admission in US colleges on the basis of SAT, the single entrance test will be conducted multiple times in a year and it will bring uniformity in academic standards and will also result to reduce the influence of donations in the Engineering Institutes in India. However, the single entrance test will not include admission to the India Institute of Technology (IITs).
Engineering Admissions in IITs
Private and state colleges will not be affected by the single admission test. IITs will continue to hold their own entrance exam (JEE Advanced) from next year as well.
"The admission for IITs will continue as per the present scheme. IITs will conduct the joint entrance examination (Advanced). Students who qualify JEE (Mains) can appear for the JEE (Advanced) examination. Approximately 200000 students qualify to appear for JEE (Advanced) examination" a senior HRD ministry official said.
The HRD ministry has asked AICTE to standardise the single entrance test, keeping "in view the linguistic diversity". A source from AICTE has said the single entrance test is to be held in multiple languages, like NEET, which is going to be conducted in 10 popular languages in India.
The HRD Ministry has requested all state government’s engineering colleges/universities to communicate their constructive suggestions for smooth implementation of the single entrance test regulation. It is also useful to request as many institutions as possible to come under a joint seat-allocation system for a more efficient seat allocation process.
Current Admission Process
At present, almost every state conduct their own admission test for admissions in the undergraduate engineering program or the admission are done on the basis of marks obtained in class 12. Five states in India accepts the JEE (Mains) score for admission in their colleges.
