Nagaland has laid the foundation stone for its maiden medical college in the state and also plans to upgrade the Kohima district hospital under the Centre’s 12th Plan, PTI reported citing State Health and Family Welfare Minister Imkong L. Imchen. State chief minister Neiphiu Rio laid the foundation stone for the medical college recently.
The Nagland Medical college is one of the 58 medical colleges that is partly financed by a centrally-sponsored scheme. The centre has sanctioned Rs. 189 crore to build up the medical college and it will be shared in the ratio of 90:10 by the Centre and the state.
The District Hospital of Kohima will be upgraded to a Medical College and the Medical College is proposed to be completed within a year and the academic session will begin from 2015-16.
Tertiary Care Hospital for Rs 45 cr
Imchen said that the Medical college will also include a Tertiary Care Hospital which will act as the Referral Centre for cases which are complicated and difficult to treat. The central government has set aside Rs 45 crore for building the tertiary care Hospital.
Medical Project Passed in 2013 But Got Delayed in Issuing Orders
The government had given its go-ahead for the project in 2013 but when it came to issuing orders, the process got delayed. However, a work order was passed on February 22, 2014 by union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to carry out the project work.
Relief to More than 1000 Patients who had to Move to Other States for treatment of Cancer and Other Diseases
Data stated that more than 1,000 patients had to look for treatment in other states for dreadful diseases like cancer owing to absence of medical facilities in Nagaland. Now people will be able to avail treatment at low rates in the state itself after the construction of the medical college & Hospital is completed.
