JNU Disaster Research Centre Inaugurated by Kiren Rijiju
JNU Disaster Research Centre Inaugurated by Kiren Rijiju on 26 October 2018 where JNU gets Disaster Research Centre on its turf after working on it since Uttarakhand disaster in 2011. Minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju has inaugurated the new centre and the official website of ‘Disaster Research Centre’. The centre established in collaboration with 3 colleges of Delhi University Lady Shri Ram, Kamala Nehru and Miranda House to train youth by sharing disaster-related research.
On the occasion of the inauguration, Kiren Rijiju said that "we cannot be left behind as we face such high numbers of natural and man-made disasters". He also said that "we have to go to the grassroots level and sensitise people". A website for Special Centre for Disaster Research was also launched at the inauguration event. A proposed amendment on disaster management is also underway and expected to be produced in the next session.
Earlier on 6 August 2015, National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) signed a MoU with JNU and the MoU suggested that two institutions (DU and JNU) should strengthen the academic institutions for a much-wanted research on disasters. The 6 teams from 6 centres were already working on it.
About JNU Special Centre for Disaster Research
The JNU Special Centre for Disaster Research will have a trans-disciplinary approach for disaster management research and will help to synchronise the boundaries of social science into natural science. The 2 functional areas of JNU Special Centre for Disaster Research are given below in the table:
