SC ST Scholarship is given to the students belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) to pursue their higher studies. The Government of India has opened a lot of opportunities for SC/ST students to pursue their higher studies. SC ST scholarships are generally provided to those students whose parent’s Annual Income ranges from 2 Lakh to 4 Lakh. The scholarship amount varies from one scholarship to the other.
The SC Scholarship is provided by the Ministry of Social Justice and the ST Scholarships are provided by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
About SC ST Scholarship
SC and ST are two types of Castes in India. These terms are mentioned in the Constitution of India. The term Scheduled Caste is mentioned in Article 341 and the Scheduled Tribe is mentioned in Article 342 of the Constitution. SC/STs are generally termed as the disadvantageous sections of society and were looked down upon in the primitive ages. But in the present era, both the two classes i.e., SC and ST are given equal importance as that of the upper caste sections of society. SC Scholarship for Students
The Scholarship for SC students is provided by the Government of India. The scholarship is awarded to cater to the top-class education opportunity for meritorious students. SC ST Scholarship - List
The scholarship scheme for SC/ ST students aims at recognizing and promoting quality education by providing full financial support. The SC ST Scholarship scheme will cover SC/ ST Students for pursuing their studies beyond Class 12. The scheme will operate in all institutes notified by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The SC ST Students who got admission in the recognized schools as prescribed by the respective schools in the norms will be eligible to apply for the SC-ST Scholarship. In case, the number of scholarships exceeds the number of awards, then the SC-ST scholarship will be restricted to the top ones in the inter-se merit list. Pre Matric Scholarship for SC/ST Students
The Pre-Matric Scholarship is generally provided to the SC/ST students of classes 9 & 10 to pursue their studies. This Scholarship is given to those SC/ST Students whose family’s annual is less than 2 Lakh per annum. The Pre Metric scholarship for SC students is provided for 10 months. The Scholarship Amount ranges from Rs. 150 o Rs. 350 per month. The Book & Ad-hoc Grant ranges from Rs.750 per annum to Rs. 1000 per annum. It has to be noted by the candidates that the process of filling and submitting the application form SC ST Scholarship is completely online. There is no procedure to fill out the form in offline mode. The candidates will be required to upload some relevant documents along with the submission of the application form.
Post Matric Scholarship for SC/ST Students
Post Matric Scholarship is provided by the Department of Government of India for the welfare of SC-ST students. The Post Matric Scholarship is given to the SC/ST students who have passed class 10 and the annual income of their parents from all sources should be less than 2.5 Lakh. The Post Matric SC ST scholarship ranges from Rs 230 to Rs 1200. The candidates who failed in Classes 9 and 10 will eligible to apply for the SC ST Scholarship scheme. Post Matric SC ST Scholarship for SC ST Students is funded by the Government and administered with the help of the State & Union Territory Governments. The Scholarship provides financial assistance to SC ST students who are enrolled in studies after class 10 in India. Students who have enrolled in correspondence courses are also eligible for the scholarship.
Upgradation of Merit Scholarship for SC/ST Students
Upgradation of Merit scholarship is for class 9 to 12 SC/ST students to provide them with special coaching classes to prepare the students for competitive examinations for seeking entry into professional courses like Engineering and Medical streams. To avail of this SC ST Scholarship, the annual income of the parents of the students should be less than 3 Lakh. The total amount of scholarship ranges from 19,000 to 25,000 per student. The main objective of the Scheme of Upgradation of Merit scholarship is to upgrade the merit of SC/ST students by providing them remedial as well as special coaching in classes 9 to 12. The remedial coaching aims to remove the deficiencies in various subjects, the special coaching is provided to prepare the students for the competitive examinations for seeking admission into professional courses like engineering and medical disciplines.
Top Class SC ST Scholarships
The Central Sector Scholarship of Top Class Education for SC Students is given to those students who have passed class 12 and have got admission to the top institutes in India such as IIMs, IITs, IISER, Commercial Pilot training etc. The amount of scholarship for students studying in private sector institutions is Rs 2 Lakh per student and for those in Commercial Pilot Training is 3.72 Lakh per student. A total number of 1250 slots are to be granted SC ST scholarships every year. The courses of study covered are Engineering, Medicine/Dentistry, Law, Management and other specialized programs. The Central Sector Scholarship of Top Class Education for SC Students once awarded then it will continue till the completion of the program, which is subject to satisfactory performance. The annual family income ceiling from all the sources for eligibility under this SC ST Scholarship Scheme is Rs. 4.50 lakh.
National Fellowship for SC/ST Students
National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste students is implemented by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The fellowship is given to the students who have taken admission in M.Phil and PhD and Post-Doctoral studies. The National fellowship for SC/ST Students is given to both Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and Senior Research Fellow (SRF). The fellowship amount for the different subjects ranges from Rs 16,000 to Rs 25,000. The National Fellowship for SC scheme caters to a total number of 2000 Fellowship programs (Junior Research Fellows) per year for SC students. This SC ST Scholarship scheme covers all universities/ institutions recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and it is implemented by the UGC itself on the pattern of the scheme of UGC Fellowships which are awarded to the research students who are pursuing PhD and M. Phil. Programs. UGC norms would be applicable, to qualify for the award of the Senior Research Fellowship scheme.
National Overseas Scholarship for SC/ST Students
National Overseas Scholarship for SC/ST students who want to pursue their studies abroad. The National Overseas SC ST Scholarship is provided to the SC ST students who have passed with 55% in their Bachelor's degree. This scholarship is meant for students to pursue a Master's Degree, PhD and Post-Doctoral Studies abroad. The students selected for the National Overseas Scholarship are mostly granted tuition costs and other educational fees charged by Foreign University, Travel and other maintenance expense. The National Overseas Scholarship for SC/ST students Scheme provides financial assistance to the selected candidates for pursuing their Master level courses and PhD abroad in the Institutes/ Universities which are recognized by the authorized body of that country. Under this Scheme, the following are the specified fields of study:
- Engineering and Management;
- Pure Sciences & Applied Sciences;
- Agricultural Sciences and Medicine;
- Commerce, Accounting & Finance; and
- Humanities & Social Science

The SC ST students who secure admission in the notified institutions will be awarded the SC ST Scholarship scheme and they will be able to avail the following benefits:
- Full tuition fee and non-refundable charges (ceiling of Rs. 2 lakhs p.a. for private institutions and Rs. 3.72 lakhs for private sector flying clubs for commercial pilots training)
- The living expenses for the beneficiary of Rs. 22200 per month for each student
- Books and stationaries of Rs. 3000 per annum per student
- Latest computer with related accessories like UPS, printer, multimedia up to Rs. 45000 as one-time assistance during the course.
