Difference Between Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC)

As per the Indian Navy Recruitment, here is the difference between PSC and SSC:

Permanent Service Commission is the one in which candidates have to work in an Indian Navy until the time of their retirement. It is granted comparatively to fewer number opportunities in Indian Navy, for example, B.tech entries, Logistics officer, General Services Officer etc, which relates to the time period of the retirement of the candidate. Permanent Commission is also granted to the NDA candidates. 

Short Service Commission is granted for a maximum number of opportunities in the Indian Navy and has a duty span of 10,12 years which is extendable to 14 years in the case of women and in the case of Pilot it is 14 years and can not be extended any further under any circumstances. The permanent commission can only be granted to the candidates on their merit and availability of vacancies.

• Selection for Permanent Commission through NDA and Naval Academy cadet entry and CDSE (Graduate) entry is through the written examination conducted by the UPSC, followed by an interview by the Service Selection Board (SSB).
  
• For all other Direct Permanent Commission entries and Short Service Commission entries, there is no written examination. These applications are shortlisted for Indian Navy Recruitment as per the criteria laid down by the Naval Headquarters, Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment. Selection is through merit alone.

Indian Navy Recruitment - Women in Indian Navy

Indian Navy recruits women on the short commission basis in officer entry only in the various branches of Indian Navy i.e. ATC, Observer, Law, Logistics, Education and Naval Architecture. The Government of India has also given approval for the Permanent Commission (PC) in the Education Branch, Law, and Naval Architecture on the completion of SSC (Short Service Commissioned) tenure depending on the merit and vacancy.
